I am a senior scientist at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, specializing in EU project coordination, circular economy solutions, and sustainable water systems. My work involves developing and managing large-scale, cross-border projects that align with the EU Green Deal, Horizon Europe research priorities, and EU environmental policies. Collaborating with RISE lead scientists, I conceptualize EU-funded research and innovation proposals, build international consortia, and lead strategic initiatives in circular economy, nutrient recovery, and water sustainability.

Since joining RISE in October 2022, I have co-led three major EU-funded projects, securing over €21 million in funding:

  • CiNURGi – EU Interreg BSR core project on circular nutrient recovery.
  • iCOSHELLs – Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Action (RIA) under EU Mission Soil.
  • FERTITEC – Horizon Europe Coordinating Support Action (CSA) for sustainable fertilizer technologies.

My role at RISE functions similarly to a key account manager for EU funding and tenders, overseeing complex funding landscapes to secure high-impact, high-value projects. In 2025, I was assigned a water portfolio focus, aligning my work with EU water-related directives and circular water management strategies. This includes research and innovation initiatives that support sustainable water use, pollution reduction, and climate resilience.

Key EU Water Directives
  • Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) – Establishes a framework for the protection and sustainable management of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters, and groundwater.
  • Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC) – Prevents nitrate pollution from agricultural sources to protect water quality.
  • Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC) – Regulates the treatment and discharge of wastewater to prevent contamination of natural water bodies.

Together, these directives shape integrated water management in the EU, guiding policies on water quality, pollution control, and sustainable resource use. At RISE, I work to apply these regulatory frameworks to develop practical solutions, foster research collaborations, and contribute to policy discussions that advance circular water management and climate-adaptive water systems.

Academic & Professional Background

I hold a PhD in General Linguistics from the University of Gothenburg, where I also served as research faculty. My academic background includes a Master of Science in Information Technology and a Master of Arts in the English Language from Singapore.

With over 15 years of experience spanning academia and executive roles, I have held positions such as:

  • Principal Investigator & Scientist, ABB Corporate Research, Sweden
  • Market Access Scientist, Nofima, Norway
  • Key Account Manager, Volvo AB, School of Executive Education, University of Gothenburg
  • Research Faculty, Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS), University of Gothenburg

As Key Account Manager at the School of Executive Education, I designed and delivered executive leadership training for Swedish multinational corporations, including Volvo AB and SKF, with programs conducted across Europe and Asia. In 2011, I attended the International Faculty Program (IFP) at IESE Business School in Barcelona, further developing my expertise in executive education, leadership, and international business strategy.

EU & Global Networks

I actively engage in policy and research networks, contributing to initiatives in nutrient stewardship, sustainable soil management, and circular economy frameworks. My affiliations include:

  • EU Interreg BSR Coordinators Network
  • EU Mission Soil Coordinators Network
  • European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP)
  • HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission)
  • EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR)

Through these networks, I collaborate with research institutions, industry partners, and policymakers to drive sustainable solutions in EU environmental policy, climate resilience, and resource management.

Beyond Work

Beyond research and policy, I have a deep appreciation for cultural heritage and academic excellence. In 1999, I had the opportunity to represent Singapore at the Miss Universe pageant, an experience that broadened my perspective on international engagement. As a member of Singapore’s Eurasian minority, I was consistently ranked among the top 5% of my community for academic performance from ages 13 to 17. These experiences reinforced my commitment to integrity, resilience, and collaboration—values that continue to shape my professional journey.
